Warsaw was the very first stop on our family gap year — the start of a journey we’ve been dreaming about for months. We landed with that mix of jet lag, adrenaline, and wide-eyed excitement, ready to explore our first city together. With just 24 hours to spend in Warsaw before we’d move on, we wanted to pack in as much history, culture, and fun as possible… without completely exhausting ourselves (or our tween).
👉 “Since we only had one night in the city, finding a hotel in the Old Town was key — no wasted time on transport. (If you’re planning your own 24 hours in Warsaw, you can compare hotels and flights easily on Expedia.)”
Here’s how our first day of the adventure unfolded.

Top 3 Things to do in Warsaw

1. Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski)
If you only pay for one attraction in Warsaw, make it the Royal Castle. Once the home of Polish monarchs, it was destroyed during WWII and painstakingly rebuilt—every brick, every fresco, restored to its former glory. Unfortunately, we made the rookie mistake of visiting on a Monday, when the castle is closed. From the outside, though, it was spectacular—especially lit up at night. Consider this my public service announcement: don’t do Warsaw castles on Mondays.
👉 Travel Tip: Book your Royal Castle tickets online to skip the line. Mornings are best if you’re fighting jet lag.

2. Walk Old Town
Old Town Warsaw is basically an open-air museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cobblestones, pastel buildings, and lively squares—it’s free, and it’s fabulous. Wandering through it feels like stepping into a painting (minus the aching feet). This is one of those experiences I’d recommend to anyone, no matter your budget.

3. Łazienki Park
You can walk to Łazienki Park in about an hour from Old Town (if you’re ambitious), or you can Uber for under $10 CAD like we did. Best decision ever. The park itself is huge and beautiful—peacocks strutting around, palaces peeking out between the trees, and enough green space to stretch your legs for hours. The monuments were closed (another Monday issue), but it was still stunning. And honestly, on such a gorgeous day, how could we resist grabbing an ice cream (lody, in Polish) to enjoy while wandering under the trees? The highlight for our teen, though, wasn’t the palaces or the peacocks—it was chasing the squirrels. Classic.
Bonus: we popped into the nearby Botanical Garden, which cost under $10 CAD for the three of us. A quiet little detour that made the day even better.

First Impressions of Warsaw
Warsaw is a city of resilience. It’s been destroyed and rebuilt, scarred and healed, yet it’s full of energy, warmth, and life. It’s a place where you can stand in a centuries-old square in the morning, wander through palace gardens in the afternoon, carb-load on pierogi, and end the day strolling past peacocks.
Where to Eat in Warsaw
We had a few food adventures in Warsaw:
Bar Mleczny (budget winner). Literally “milk bars,” these canteens are a communist-era holdover, serving traditional Polish food at cafeteria prices. We had eggs over easy with a side salad for about $4 CAD. Simple, hearty, and the best deal in town.
Restaurant Zapiecek (skip it). This was our hotel’s recommendation, but the Polish food tasted like it had been pre-frozen, microwaved, and shipped straight from Sysco. Tourist trap vibes all the way!
Podwale 25 (worth it). A 10-minute walk from our hotel in Old Town, this place came recommended by another travel blogger—Passport for Living. Yes, it was pricier, but the pierogi, schnitzel, and ribs were authentic and delicious. A proper Polish feast.
Zapiekanki (must try). This is Poland’s answer to fast food genius: half a baguette topped with mushrooms, cheese, and other toppings, toasted until gooey. Basically Polish pizza, and it did not disappoint.

Where to Stay in Warsaw
We stayed in the heart of Warsaw’s Old Town at Jess Hotel and Spa Warsaw Old Town. Location-wise, you can’t beat it—you’re steps away from history, restaurants, and cobblestones galore. But the reality check:
- The rooms were small.
- The walls were thin.
- The staff were fine (not overly friendly, not rude).
- The elevator was broken during our stay. Luckily, we were on the first floor, so only one flight of luggage-lifting was required.
Basically you are paying for location, not luxury.
If you prefer a different vibe, you’ll find plenty of options on Expedia. For example, Hotel Bellotto offers historic luxury in a former palace, while Ibis Budget Warszawa Centrum is a budget-friendly and family-friendly choice just steps from the square.
| Gap Year Kickoff Tip Box: Warsaw Edition 📍 Getting Around – Warsaw is super walkable in the Old Town, but for longer distances, grab a tram, bus, or Uber. Public transport tickets are inexpensive and easy to buy from machines or kiosks. 🍽 Food Tip – Pierogi are a must, but don’t skip trying zapiekanka for a quick snack. Many restaurants have English menus, but learning “Dziękuję” (jen-Koo-yeh) – thank you – goes a long way. 🎟 Tickets & Timing – If you plan on visiting the Royal Castle – book tickets online to skip the line. If you’re jet lagged, aim for morning visits when you’re freshest. |
The Syp’s Survival Summary
Day one of our family gap year: complete. We survived the jet lag and 24 hours in Warsaw.
Warsaw surprised us in all the right ways. Even with Monday closures, a broken hotel elevator, and one very underwhelming plate of “Polish” food, the city still charmed us with its history, walkability, and wallet-friendly eats. Between Old Town’s cobblestones, Łazienki Park’s peacocks, and the joy of discovering zapiekanki, our first day set the bar high.
If this is how our family gap year begins—equal parts beauty, blisters, and belly laughs—then we’re more than ready for what’s ahead.
