10 Things to Do Before Leaving for Long-Term International Travel

Long Term Travel Preparation

Thinking about jetting off for months (or even a year!) of international adventure? Whether you’re planning a family gap year, sabbatical, or digital nomad lifestyle, preparing for long-term travel isn’t something you can leave until the last minute.

Here’s a month-by-month breakdown of 10 key things to take care of before your departure — so when it’s time to go, all you have to worry about is choosing window or aisle.

9–12 Months Out: Dream Big, Plan Smart

1. Check Your Passport (and Others’!)

Make sure everyone’s passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended return date. Many countries require this for entry.

✈️ Pro Tip: Renewing a passport can take weeks (sometimes months) depending on where you live. Start early, especially if you’re traveling with kids.

We use an RFID-blocking passport holder to keep all our documents safe and organized – especially handy when juggling multiple passports and boarding passes.

2. Start Mapping Out Your Route

This is the fun part! Decide:

  • Where you want to go
  • How long you’ll spend in each place
  • What kind of pace feels right for your lifestyle

Look into:

  • Climate patterns (rainy season? typhoons?)
  • Safety and political stability
  • Restrictions
  • School terms if you’re worldschooling

3. Check Visa Requirements

Different countries have wildly different visa rules:

  • Some allow 90 days visa-free
  • Others require applications in advance
  • Some require proof of onward travel or bank funds

Start a long-term travel prep spreadsheet to track what’s needed where. (You’ll thank yourself later.)

4. Look Into Vaccines and Health Prep

Visit a travel clinic to get:

  • Required vaccines (Yellow Fever, etc.)
  • Recommended vaccines (Hep A, Typhoid, Rabies depending on destination)
  • Prescriptions for travel meds (e.g., antimalarials)

🩺 Note: Some vaccines need to be given in a series over a month or two, so don’t delay.

5. Start Researching Travel Insurance

Long-term insurance is not the same as a short vacation policy.
Look for:

  • Emergency evacuation
  • Adventure sports coverage
  • Trip interruption
  • Pre-existing condition coverage (if applicable)

Travel insurance gave us peace of mind, but we also grabbed Air Tracker Tags so our bags wouldn’t go on their own vacation.

3–6 Months Out: Book It & Bank It

6. Book Flights and Initial Accommodations

The sweet spot for international flights is often 2–5 months out, depending on destination and season. Set fare alerts and watch for deals – I used Skyscanner to track prices and snag the best rates.

Secure at least:

  • Your first few nights of accommodation
  • Any key locations that book early (like summer in Europe or holidays in Asia)

7. Notify Your Bank + Optimize for Travel

Call your bank to:

  • Let them know you’ll be abroad
  • Ask about foreign transaction fees
  • Inquire about ATM partnerships overseas

Consider getting a no-foreign-fee credit card, or a debit card that reimburses ATM fees worldwide (like Charles Schwab or Wise).

8. Sort Out Your Phone Plan

Look into:

  • Unlocking your phone
  • eSIMs (like Airalo or Nomad) for affordable local data
  • WhatsApp or Signal for messaging

We relied on an international travel adapter and a high capacity power bank so no device ever died mid-navigation.

1–3 Months Out: Wrap Up Logistics

9. Digitize Your Life

Set up systems for:

  • Online banking and automatic bill payments
  • Cloud storage for important documents
  • Scanning and backing up IDs, insurance, and prescriptions

If you’re running a business or managing remote work, make sure your tech setup is solid and your VPN is reliable.

Last Month: Final Touches

10. Get Organized — Physically and Mentally

  • Finalize your packing list (less is more!)
  • Make copies of all documents (leave one set with a trusted friend)
  • Download key apps: currency converters, translator, map apps that work offline
  • Print or save boarding passes and hotel reservations offline

Packing cubes are great for keeping your items organized both in your suitcase or backpack, but also at your destination. Some of our favorites include:

  • BAGSMART compression packing cubes
  • Baggallini long compression cubes – great for in between the suitcase handle
  • Any Eagle Creek packing cubes – these are the most light weight.

🧳 Bonus: Do a trial pack 1–2 weeks before you leave. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t fly.

🚗 Bonus (If You Plan to Drive): Some countries require an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in addition to your regular license. It’s inexpensive, valid for one year, and can save you headaches with car rentals or traffic stops overseas. Apply through your local automobile association before departure.
