If you ask five people what qualifies as a “day trip,” you’ll get answers ranging from “anything under 4 hours” to “if I have to pack snacks, it’s too far.” As for us, two hours was the absolute limit. Beyond that, the roads get windy, the snacks run out, and someone (usually me) starts asking, “Are we there yet?” every seven minutes.
This guide includes the best day trips up to 2 hours from Agios Nikolaos—with many as close as 20 minutes and most sitting in that sweet 45–75 minute range.
Additionally, each combination is designed so you get maximum variety (ruins + beaches, caves + cute towns, hikes + lazy seaside lunches) while still avoiding long drives. In other words, everything is doable, comfortable, and properly timed so you can actually enjoy it.
And if you hate hiking? Don’t worry. Every single day trip includes an “I don’t like hikes” alternative.
Before you dive into the day trips, here’s one thing we learned VERY quickly: Crete is best explored by car. Yes, public transportation exists… somewhere. And sure, it works in theory. But if you want flexibility, hidden beaches, tiny mountain villages, and the ability to stop every time you see something vaguely adorable (my specialty), you need wheels.
For that reason, we always book through localrent.com — consistently the best pricing, local companies, no surprise nonsense, and actual humans handing you the keys instead of a kiosk that claims your reservation never existed.
Let’s get into it.

A wide, quiet stretch of coastline with clear water—perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and escaping crowds. - Optional: Mylonas Falls Hike (1–1.5 hrs)
A short, rocky trail leading to a pretty waterfall tucked into the hills. Note: Mylonas Falls often slows to a trickle in the summer heat, so this hike is best in the fall, winter, or early spring when water flow is stronger. Avoid after heavy rain. - Optional (Summer Only): Chrissi Island (4–5 hrs)
If you’re visiting between June and September, you can swap the waterfall for a boat trip to Chrissi Island—a Caribbean-looking speck of white sand, cedar forest, and turquoise water. Boats leave from Ierapetra’s port and turn the day into a full seaside escape.
Don’t Like Hikes? Swap the waterfall for more beaches:
- Achlia
- Ferma
- Agia Fotia
Great For: Beach lovers who want a quieter south-coast vibe.

A tiny fishing village facing Spinalonga, known for fresh seafood and calm waterfront views. Even in off-season it’s charming—just check what’s open. - Elounda Beaches (1–2 hrs)
One of the calmest, warmest swimming spots in northeast Crete. Family-friendly, sheltered, and great for an easy beach afternoon. - Windmills of Elounda (15–20 min stop)
The old stone windmills scattered near the causeway and peninsula make for quick but gorgeous photo stops—especially at sunset.
Off-Season Alternative
- Drive to Kolokitha Beach (1–1.5 hrs total, including exploring and photo stops)
And if you’re feeling adventurous, then definitely make the drive across the narrow causeway and along the rocky peninsula road to Kolokitha—easily one of the bluest coves near Agios Nikolaos.
Just know: the road feels like it was designed by someone who hates suspension systems. But the water? Unreal.
Don’t Like Hikes? Perfect—this day trip involves zero hiking unless you choose to wander the peninsula. Easy, relaxing, scenic.

Don’t Like Hikes? Even if the cave reopens in future years, this day trip is still very easy—just a short uphill walk to the entrance. However, for 2025, when the cave is closed, it becomes an even more relaxed outing, with a scenic drive, beautiful viewpoints, and leisurely village wandering.

| The Syps Family Day Trip Tip Box 🐐 Rent the smallest car you can fit into. Crete’s roads have… personality. Narrow villages, cliffside switchbacks, goats with zero road etiquette. Small = survival. We use localrent.com for the best local deals. 🐐 Download offline Google Maps. Sometimes the mountains steal your signal. Sometimes for… hours. 🐐 Bring water, snacks, and emergency bakery goods. You will get hungry at the exact moment the nearest taverna is closed “for family reasons.” (In Crete, this covers 87% of all reasons.) Try these very packable travel water bottles. 🐐 Check off-season openings. Boats to Spinalonga? Closed. Dikteon Cave? Closed until end of 2025. Kritsa Gorge? Sometimes closed after rain. Plan ahead. Book tickets ahead of time with GetYourGuide. 🐐 Wear proper shoes for gorges. Flip-flops are for beaches. Gorges will betray you. Hiking shoes if you have packed them, but a good pair of running shoes will do. 🐐 Add 15 minutes to every drive for donkey crossings. And goat crossings. And photo stops. And stopping to buy honey from a grandmother who materializes out of nowhere. |
The Syps Survival Summary
Did we survive driving together as a family on Cretan mountain roads? YES — and honestly, we’re as shocked as you are.
There were tight turns, surprise goats, questionable “roads,” and one tense moment when Google Maps suggested we take a path that was basically a hiking trail.
But with snacks, stubborn optimism, and a car that refused to quit, we made it through.
Chaos? Yes.
Regrets? None.
Agios Nikolaos is truly the sweet spot of Eastern Crete — big enough to offer great restaurants, beaches, and waterfront strolls, yet small enough to feel charming instead of chaotic. Furthermore, it’s central without being hectic, scenic without being remote, and ideally positioned so that almost all the best day trips are within just one hour.
You can:
- Head north to Elounda and Spinalonga
- East to Vai Palm Forest, Sitia, and Zakros
- South to Ierapetra and waterfalls
- West to plateaus, caves, and ruins
…all without packing your entire life into the car every day.
It’s relaxing, convenient, beautiful, and full of easy evenings by the water after your daytime adventures.
In short?
Agios Nikolaos = the Goldilocks of Crete bases.
Just right.
