Why We Chose to Take a Family Gap Year.
Some people call it a midlife crisis.
We call it hitting pause on the grind — and choosing adventure instead.
Last year, we lost my mother.
In the months that followed, my husband and I found ourselves deeply reflecting on how she lived her life.
And let me tell you — she lived.
My mom didn’t tiptoe through life — she danced through it in heels. She was bold, curious, fearless, and always ready for the next adventure. If she wanted to go somewhere, she didn’t wait for the “right time” — she just went. Whether it was with her senior’s group, a couple of spontaneous friends, or one of us kids in tow, she made it happen.

She was the ultimate High-Heeled Globe Trotter. From the Orient Express to the Egyptian pyramids, she embraced every journey — often in impractical but fabulous shoes. And she was lucky — she had her health.
But not everyone does.
We’ve all heard those stories:
Couples who save their dream trips for retirement, only to be interrupted by illness or unexpected loss. Plans that never leave the notebook. Dreams deferred indefinitely.
So after she passed, we asked ourselves:
Why not now?
Why assume that “someday” will be waiting for us.
What if we hit pause on “normal life” — and finally did the thing we always talked about?
Turns out, you don’t need to wait for school to be over. Or for retirement. Or for some magical cosmic signal. You just need to decide to go.
Choosing a Family Gap Year: Travel Now, Not Later
So here we are.
Our family has traded our daily routine for full-time travel, our house for hotels, and school drop-offs for museum tours, foreign markets, train rides, and unforgettable moments. This isn’t just a vacation — it’s a year of slow travel, worldschooling, cultural immersion, and personal growth.
We’re doing this to make memories, deepen our family bond, and experience life through a different lens — not just through postcards or Instagram photos, but through real, lived experiences.
What This Travel Blog Is All About
This blog is our digital journal. A place to share what we’re learning — about the world, about each other, and about what it means to really live.
It’s for:
- Families considering a sabbatical or family gap year with kids
- Parents curious about worldschooling or homeschooling while traveling
- Anyone wondering if it’s too late, too early, or too risky to choose a different path
We’re calling this our Inspiration Edition — the beginning of our year of travel, family learning, food discoveries, and the inevitable detours that come with living out a dream powered by one part heart and one part spreadsheet.
Will the Syps survive a year of travel together?
Follow Our Journey
Follow along as we share:
- Family travel tips and packing guides
- Cultural experiences and food adventures
- Lessons from the road (some learned the hard way)
We’re not chasing perfection — just connection, curiosity, and a few good stories to tell.
Will we survive the journey? Will the journey survive us?
Stay tuned.
