Cefalù, Sicily: The Beach Town Everyone Raves About… But Is It For You?

Cefalù

If you’re dreaming of slowing down in Sicily, Cefalù might be exactly what you need. This beautiful coastal town, just an hour from Palermo or about two hours from Catania, is pure seaside bliss — the kind of place where you trade sightseeing for sunbathing and schedule your day around meals instead of museums.

Even at the end of October, Cefalù was lively and full of tourists. I can only imagine how bumpin’ it gets in the summer. The main “must-do” here is La Rocca, the massive rocky headland that towers over town. You can hike up for stunning views of the coast and cathedral below — but if you’re not in a climbing mood, shopping, eating, and strolling the boardwalk are perfectly acceptable alternatives.

🌿 Travel Tip: For a more curated experience, book Charming Cefalù— a private guided walking tour that will take you beyond the beach crowds and into the city’s real charm.

We stopped for lunch and a wander along the beach, which honestly felt like the perfect amount of time. If you’re here to slow down, sip a spritz, and soak up the coastal vibe, you’ll love Cefalù. If you’re chasing activities and adventure — maybe not your spot.

We ate at Fooda, a casual place right near the water. Great service, tasty food, and yes, they do serve horse meat burgers (we were not that brave). We did try some Sicilian wine, though — and let’s just say it had a unique flavor. True Sicilian wines come from grapes grown in Mount Etna’s volcanic soil, which adds mineral notes that locals love… but my palate wasn’t quite convinced.

Getting There & Parking

  • From Palermo: about 1 hour by car or train.
  • From Catania: around 2 hours by car.
  • Parking: tricky! The old town is limited-traffic, and spots near the beach fill up fast. Look for parking near Piazza Cristoforo Colombo or Lungomare Giuseppe Giardina — both close enough to walk but easier to escape when it’s time to leave.

Where to Stay in Cefalù

If you decide to linger a little longer in this seaside gem, there’s no shortage of charming places to stay — from relaxed B&Bs to full-on resort escapes. Just remember: Cefalù books up fast in summer, so reserve early if you want that sea view.

  • B&B Le Suites di Costanza – A modern, newly-renovated guesthouse located right on the seafront promenade (just 200-300 m from the beach and a short walk into the old town). Rooms feature balconies, air-conditioning, mini-bars and excellent breakfasts. Note: the building has no elevator, so luggage helps.
  • Skyview Cefalù – It’s modern, spotlessly clean, and perfectly located just above the old town. You’ll get stunning sea views, easy access to the beach and historic center, and a peaceful retreat to unwind after a day of exploring.

The Syps Family Cefalù Tip Box
🏖️ Pack smart for the beach: A pocket beach blanket is a game changer — lightweight, sand-resistant, and folds down small enough to fit in your day bag. Perfect for an impromptu beach stop or sunset picnic.
🏖️ Stay connected: Download Google Translate and Google Maps offline before you go — Cefalù’s narrow lanes and patchy Wi-Fi can make navigating… interesting.
🏖️ Sip local, pack light: If you fall in love with Sicilian wine (or even if you don’t), a wine travel bag keeps your bottle safe in your suitcase.

The Syps Survival Summary

Did we survive the Beachside parking? Barely. Even off-season, it’s a mini circus of scooters, rental cars, and tourists all vying for the same spot.

Cefalù is one of those places that looks exactly like a postcard — turquoise water, colorful umbrellas, and medieval streets that tumble straight to the sea. If you’re after a relaxed Sicilian escape, this is your place. Stay a night (or three), enjoy long beach days, and let time slow down.

If you’re just passing through, like we did, a lunch stop and a seaside stroll will give you a perfect taste of this coastal gem — no horse burgers required.
