When you think of Dubai, your mind probably jumps to skyscrapers, gold souks, and the occasional camel wandering through the desert—not a 10-million-liter indoor aquarium inside a shopping mall. Yet here it is: the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, right in the heart of the Dubai Mall.
Like everything else in Dubai, it’s designed to impress.
But the real question is: is the Dubai Aquarium actually worth it?
Short answer: yes… and also maybe no. Let me explain.

Let’s start with the basics—because the numbers are impressive.

The aquarium is split into two parts:
- The Tunnel (the iconic walk-through experience)
- The Underwater Zoo (located upstairs, with penguins, otters, jellyfish, and the massive King Croc)
Dubai also emphasizes conservation and sustainability, with breeding programs, marine rescue initiatives, and educational outreach—important context when discussing an aquarium built inside a mall.
The Tunnel Experience: Sharks, Rays, and Pure Dubai Drama
The underwater tunnel is, without question, the highlight of the Dubai Aquarium.
As you step inside, sharks glide overhead with slow, effortless confidence while rays drift past like floating UFOs, completely unbothered by the crowd below. The scale of the tank is genuinely impressive—wide, tall, and immersive enough that for a few minutes, you forget you’re standing inside a shopping mall.
It’s cinematic and dramatic in that very Dubai way. One moment you’re surrounded by sharks and swirling schools of fish, and the next you exit the tunnel to find yourself back beneath a Zara and a Cheesecake Factory. The contrast is surreal, slightly absurd, and oddly part of the charm.
If you only do one thing at the Dubai Aquarium, make it this. The tunnel delivers the “wow” factor people expect—and it’s the reason most visitors leave feeling like the visit was at least partially worth it.
Animal Experiences: Incredible—but at an Extra Cost
Dubai really leans into paid animal encounters:

That said:

Getting up close, petting a penguin, and interacting with the trainer felt personal, educational, and genuinely special. It was hands-down the most memorable part of our visit.
Would I do the penguin encounter again? Yes.
Would I pay for multiple add-ons? No.

A conservation leader.
- Incredible open-ocean exhibits
- Strong environmental mission
- Feels deeply connected to real marine science
Less spectacle, more substance—and that’s a compliment.
🐋 Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium (Japan)
Famous for its Kuroshio Sea tank.
- Massive viewing window
- Whale sharks in a serene, minimalist setting
- Less crowded, more contemplative
Dubai’s tunnel is dramatic; Okinawa’s is calming.

The closest comparison to Dubai.
- Large indoor tanks
- Strong visual impact
- More cohesive layout and flow
- Fewer aggressive upsells
Between the two?
Singapore seems more polished overall.
Ticket Prices: Why Dubai Feels Expensive
Here’s where Dubai loses points.
The base ticket price feels high for:
- The time spent inside
- The number of exhibits
- How much content sits behind additional paywalls
By comparison:
- Valencia offers vastly more for the price
- Vancouver delivers better variety without constant upgrades
- Georgia & Monterey Bay feel more complete at entry level

Would we go again?
❌ Unfortunately, no.
It was visually impressive, the penguins were a highlight, and the tunnel was cool to see once. But between the cost and how it compares to other world-class aquariums, this is very much a one-and-done experience for us.
