If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a watercolor painting — with stone lanes, overflowing flower pots, and sunshine bouncing off pink-hued walls — then Spello is your place. This little Umbrian hill town is as charming as it gets… and yes, another hill.

A (Very) Brief History of Spello
Spello was once a Roman settlement called Hispellum, and you can still spot its ancient roots today — from the well-preserved gates (like Porta Consolare) to old mosaics hiding behind unassuming doors. Later, medieval charm took over, and now it’s known as one of Italy’s official Borghi più belli d’Italia — aka “most beautiful villages.” (They’re not wrong.)
How to Get There & Where to Park
Spello is an easy day trip from Assisi or Perugia — about a 15–30 minute drive depending on where you’re coming from. If you’re already in Umbria, it’s basically on the way to somewhere else pretty.
Parking? Follow the signs to Parcheggio di Porta Consolare — it’s near the lower entrance and perfect for starting your uphill adventure. Trust me, you’ll want to go up only once.
The Walk (a.k.a. The Uphill Situation)
Our visit was a lovely stroll — about 90 minutes total to the top and back down, including the mandatory photo and gelato breaks.
But seriously, why are all Italian villages uphill?

After two weeks of stair climbing through wells, towers, and medieval streets, our legs have given up resisting. It’s becoming second nature.
Well… for most of us. My daughter still announces halfway up that she’s “definitely dying.”
Adding to the charm (or chaos), we had front-row seats to a group of young Italian men — apparently fueled by post-lunch vino — serenading every passerby. Romantic? Maybe. Hilarious? Absolutely.
Flower Power

If you’ve been to southern Spain, you’ll get déjà vu. Every corner in Spello bursts with flowers — colorful pots spilling over stone walls, balconies dripping with blooms. It’s basically an Instagram filter in real life.
Perfect Pairings
Spello may be small — a relaxed wander takes about 90 minutes, even with plenty of photo and gelato stops — so it’s the perfect half-day destination.
For a full day of Umbrian magic, pair it with nearby Rasiglia and Assisi. You can definitely do all three in one day if you start early. Begin in Rasiglia, the charming “water village,” where crystal-clear streams weave through stone houses — it’s the ideal spot for an early lunch by the water. Then make your way to Spello for flower-filled lanes, a leisurely climb, and a mid-afternoon gelato break. Finish in Assisi, catching the sunset over the Basilica of St. Francis.
It’s the ultimate Umbrian trio — each village offering its own mix of beauty, history, and yes… a few more uphill steps (because apparently, Italy doesn’t believe in flat terrain).

The Syps Survival Summary
Did we survive another uphill walk? Yes — and it’s actually getting easier!
Spello is pure charm — quiet, colorful, and ridiculously photogenic. Between the flowers, the laughter, and the ever-present hills, it’s the kind of place that makes you slow down… even if your legs are begging for a flat road again.
