How My Husband Got Us a Private Burger Tasting at Zest Burger & Bar in Chiang Mai

Zest Burger and Bar

Some people find hidden temples.
Some people stumble into secret bars.
My husband? He accidentally talks his way into private burger tastings.

This is the story of how a casual lunch routine in Chiang Mai turned into an invite-only preview of a brand-new burger joint before it even opened.

The Burger Place That Was Never Open

During our stay in Chiang Mai, there was a small plaza near our accommodation that we walked to almost daily. It became our go-to spot for lunch, sometimes dinner—easy, familiar, and just far enough away to justify dessert.

Every single day, we passed the same burger place.

Morning? Closed.
Afternoon? Closed.
Night? Still closed.

Lights off. Doors shut. A mystery.

The place looked good though—clean, modern, the kind of spot that promised a proper burger. We assumed it was either delayed, abandoned, or opening “soon” in the vague Thailand sense of the word.

Enter: My Husband, Doing What He Does Best

One afternoon, my husband headed to the plaza to pick up a few staples. This time, the impossible happened—the burger joint’s doors were open, and there was a couple of people inside.

Naturally, he did what he always does.

He popped his head in.

A conversation started. Introductions were made. Backgrounds were exchanged. Somehow—somehow—this casual hello turned into an invitation for a private burger tasting the following night.

I don’t know how he does it, but I’ve learned to just go with it.

A First Look at Zest Burger and Bar

The next evening, we returned to officially meet the owners and see the space properly. The restaurant is called Zest Burger and Bar, and it’s every bit as inviting as you’d hope.

The vibe?
Modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed without feeling pretentious. The kind of place you could easily imagine becoming a neighborhood favorite.

The owners—a lovely couple—welcomed us in, and we spent the evening chatting about:

  • Their journey into the restaurant business
  • What it’s like opening a spot in Thailand compared to elsewhere
  • Their background, our background
  • And, of course… burgers

Let’s Talk About the Burgers

Zest does gourmet-style burgers—and they do them properly.

  • A generous sized patty
  • Upscale, well-balanced toppings
  • Custom-made buns from a local bakery (always a good sign)

They made us two burgers that night:

🍔 The Zest Burger (Their Classic)

Zest Burger and Bar

Absolutely spot on.

Juicy, well-seasoned, perfectly constructed. Every element worked together instead of competing for attention. This is the kind of burger you crave again the next day.

It tastes as good as it looks!

Despite being skeptical about the cheese choice (gouda) – the kiddo gave it a 9.5/10! I personally love gouda.

🧀 The Brie Burger (Feature Burger, Name TBD)

Very good—but not quite there yet.

The idea was solid, and the execution was close, but it sparked a genuinely fun discussion about how to really bring out the flavor of the brie. And that’s where it gets exciting…

Let’s just say: changes were discussed, ideas were shared, and improvements will be made.

I’m not going to ruin it for you.
You’ll have to go try it yourself. 😉

Naturally, There Was a Burger Scorecard

Because this was a serious tasting—and because my husband cannot experience food without turning it into a semi-official evaluation—he created a burger scorecard.

This is not new behavior.

At home, pizza night comes with categories, commentary, and light debate. So of course a private burger tasting in Chiang Mai required structure.

Each burger was scored on:

  • Visual appeal (because we eat with our eyes first)
  • Size & patty presence (no flimsy burgers allowed)
  • Taste & balance
  • Seasoning
  • Bun-to-burger ratio (a crucial metric)
  • Overall execution

We tasted, discussed, re-tasted, and scored—politely, thoughtfully, and with the kind of seriousness usually reserved for judging competitions that do not, in fact, exist.

To their credit, the owners leaned right into it. Questions were asked. Notes were taken. Burger theory was discussed. No one panicked.

It was equal parts hilarious and genuinely productive—and honestly, it made the whole experience even better. There’s something refreshing about a restaurant that welcomes feedback, especially when it’s delivered via an unsolicited but well-organized scorecard.

The Syps Survival Summary

Did Zest Burger and Bar survive the Syps? Yes — survived and impressed.

Zest Burger & Bar didn’t just pass the test — they took feedback, leaned into it, and proved they know exactly what kind of burger joint they want to be. This is a place run by people who care about what they’re serving and who they’re serving it to.

If you’re in Chiang Mai and craving a genuinely good, gourmet-style burger, this one’s worth seeking out. We have no doubt Zest Burger & Bar is going to be successful, and we can’t wait to come back and see them in full swing.
