The Best Things to Do in Koh Samui For Families

Koh Samui

Koh Samui might not have been our favorite stop in Thailand overall, but when it comes to family-friendly activities, it definitely delivers. If you’re traveling with kids and looking for experiences that mix culture, animals, and downtime (because… kids), these were the standout things to do—or the ones we heard families rave about the most.

Walk to Wat Plai Laem & Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple)

One of the easiest and most rewarding family outings on Koh Samui is simply walking to the temples—especially if you’re staying in the northeastern part of the island.

Wat Plai Laem is colorful, lively, and surprisingly engaging for kids. The massive statue of Guanyin (the Goddess of Mercy) rises out of a lake, surrounded by smaller statues, bridges, and fish swimming below. Kids love tossing fish food into the water, while adults appreciate the intricate details and peaceful atmosphere.

A short walk away is Wat Phra Yai, home to the famous Big Buddha. The steps up aren’t too challenging, and the views from the top make it worthwhile. It’s a great opportunity to introduce kids to Thai culture and Buddhism in a way that feels accessible and not overly formal.

Family tip: Dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees), bring water, and go earlier in the day before the heat really kicks in.

Visit an Elephant Sanctuary

Seeing elephants in Thailand can be a powerful experience for kids—but choosing the right sanctuary is key.

Koh Samui has several elephant sanctuaries that market themselves as ethical. The better ones focus on observation, feeding, and learning, rather than riding or performances. At these sanctuaries, families can watch elephants roam, feed them fruits and vegetables, and learn about their history and rehabilitation.

For kids, it’s a memorable chance to see these animals up close while also learning about animal welfare and conservation.

Visit a Capybara Café (Yes, Really)

This was, without question, one of our daughter’s favorite experiences on Koh Samui.

Capybara cafés have popped up across Thailand, and Koh Samui has several—likely all run by the same owner. We visited the one near Fisherman’s Village, and loved it so much we went twice.

There’s an entrance fee of around 400 THB, and you can buy drinks inside if you want. The capybaras wander freely, are incredibly chill, and clearly accustomed to gentle interaction. Watching kids sit calmly while a capybara casually plops down next to them is… honestly adorable.

Why families love it:

  • Low-stress
  • Unique (how often do you hang out with a capybara?)
  • Perfect for animal-loving kids who might not be ready for bigger adventures

Enjoy the Beach & Ocean

Koh Samui

Sometimes the best family activity is the simplest one—and Koh Samui’s beaches are made for that.

Many beaches have calm, shallow water, making them ideal for younger swimmers. Add in warm ocean temperatures, soft sand, and beachfront restaurants, and you’ve got an easy day that doesn’t require much planning.

We found ourselves gravitating toward beach and pool days, especially during the more humid parts of the day when sightseeing felt… ambitious.

Family tip: Choose accommodations with direct beach access or a pool—having an easy retreat makes a huge difference when traveling with kids.

Visit Pig Island (Koh Madsum)

We didn’t make it to Pig Island ourselves, but it came up repeatedly in conversations with other families—and every single one raved about it.

Pig Island (Koh Madsum) is exactly what it sounds like: a small island where pigs roam freely along the beach. Most visits are done via half-day boat tours, often combined with snorkeling and beach time.

Kids love the novelty of seeing pigs lounging in the sand and splashing in the water, and parents appreciate that it’s a short, manageable excursion rather than a full-day commitment.

Heads-up: It’s very Instagram-famous, so expect crowds—and make sure any tour operator treats the animals responsibly.

The Syps Survival Summary

Did we survive Koh Samui with a teen? Barely – and only because we went to the Capybara Cafe multiple times.

Koh Samui may not be everyone’s dream destination, but for families, it offers a solid mix of culture, animals, and easygoing beach time. Whether you’re feeding fish at a temple, meeting elephants, chilling with capybaras 🦫, or just floating in the ocean, there’s plenty here to keep kids engaged—and parents sane.

If you’re planning a family trip to Thailand, Koh Samui can be a fun (and relatively low-stress) stop—especially when you focus on the experiences that truly work for traveling families.
