The day has finally come. After months—no, years—of dreaming, planning, and endless “what if” conversations, we’re boarding our very first flight to kick off our family gap year and start on our journey. Today, we leave Newark, New Jersey and fly to Warsaw, Poland, the maiden voyage, the first chapter of what we hope will be a year filled with new cultures, new experiences, and moments we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.
It’s a strange feeling to be here, at the threshold of something so big. On one hand, we’re buzzing with excitement. On the other, we’re carrying just enough anxiety to keep us humble and double-checking our passports every few minutes.

The Excitement of a First Step; The Start of Our Journey
Every journey has a starting point, but there’s something extra special about the first flight of a long-term trip. It’s the moment when the dream stops being an idea and starts becoming your reality.
As we rolled our suitcases through the terminal this morning, it really hit us: this is happening. We’ve traded the comfort of our familiar routines for the wide-open possibilities of the road. Ahead of us are twelve months of travel—different cities, different languages, and different ways of living.
And yet, our first destination isn’t chosen at random. Warsaw isn’t just a dot on the map for us—it’s part of our family story.
Why Poland Comes First
We chose Poland as the first stop of our family gap year because it’s where our roots run deep.
My husband emigrated from Poland to Canada when he was just six years old, carrying with him a lifetime of family traditions and stories from his first home. My extended family still lives there, so this leg of the journey is more than just sightseeing—it’s a homecoming of sorts.
Starting our journey in Poland allows us to connect with our heritage, introduce our tween to the places and people that shaped our family, and create memories that bridge generations. It’s a chance for us to walk the same streets as dad once did, to taste the same food our great-grandparents made, and to understand that travel isn’t just about where you go—it’s about who you connect with along the way.

The Nerves That Come Along for the Ride
Of course, excitement doesn’t cancel out nerves. There’s still that low hum of “Did we remember everything?” running in the background.
Do we have enough clothes for changing weather?
Did we pack enough underwear?
What about the extra charger for the tablet?
And—most importantly—do we have snacks?
You can plan all you want, but no matter how much you prepare, there’s always that moment when you realize part of the adventure is figuring things out as you go.
Staying Present So the Year Doesn’t Fly By
One of our biggest hopes for this family gap year is that we don’t let it pass in a blur. It’s easy to get so caught up in logistics—train schedules, hotel check-ins, deciding where to eat—that you forget to really be there.
We’ve promised ourselves a few things:
- Slow mornings whenever possible, even if that means seeing one less landmark.
- Unplugged moments, where phones and cameras go away so we can simply watch life unfold.
- Gratitude check-ins, where we pause and talk about what we’re thankful for that day.
Travel has a way of speeding up time. We don’t want to reach the end of this journey and feel like we blinked and missed it.
The First of Many “Firsts”
This flight is just the first of many new experiences we’ll share as a family. It’s the first passport stamps, the first time figuring out foreign grocery stores, and while we actually speak Polish (so ordering coffee in a different language won’t come into play just yet), we know that challenge is waiting for us at our next destination.
We know there will be challenges—missed connections, language mix-ups, moments when we wish for the comfort of home. But there will also be magical moments that make it all worth it: watching the sunrise in a city we’ve never been to, seeing our tween discover something new that sparks her curiosity, making friends we never would have met otherwise.
A Toast to the Unknown
As we take off for Warsaw, the start of our journey, we’re holding onto this: the unknown is where the magic lives. We don’t have all the answers, and that’s exactly how it should be.
Here’s to staying curious.
To being brave enough to start.
Here’s to our maiden voyage—the start of our journey, the first step in a year of slow travel, heritage connections, and memories that will shape our family forever.
