What’s in My Toiletry Bag: Travel Essentials for a Year Abroad

Toiletry Bag

Packing a toiletry bag for long-term travel is a fine balance between bringing what you need and not packing the entire bathroom cabinet.
Even though we’re checking luggage, I’ve opted for solid products whenever possible — less chance of leaks, less mess, and more space for souvenirs (or emergency chocolate).

I’m also not a big makeup wearer, so my “beauty arsenal” is… modest: a powder foundation, eyebrow powder, and chap stick. That’s it. Low maintenance = less to lose, break, or explode in transit.

The toiletry bag I use is sadly discontinued (eBags pack-it-flat)— which is a shame, because it’s one of the best I’ve ever had. It packs flat, but somehow swallows a ridiculous amount of stuff like a magician’s hat.
Since I can’t link you to mine, here’s a great alternative that’s similar in size, shape, and “Mary Poppins bag” abilities.

My TSA Liquids Bag

Even with checked bags, I keep a TSA-friendly liquids bag ready — just in case my checked bag gets lost. In there, I stash only what I must have to survive the first 24 hours:

  • Travel-size contact solution and case
  • CeraVe face cream
  • Toothpaste and toothbrush
Did You Know?
Contact solution is exempt from the 100ml rule.
You can bring a full-size bottle because it’s considered a medical necessity. It does need to be removed and shown at security, but it’s totally allowed.
I still pack my full-size bottle in my checked bag, but this is great info if you wear contacts and travel carry-on only.

The Rest of My Essentials

In my main toiletry bag, I’ve gone for practical, compact, and (mostly) solid options:

  • Deodorant (solid stick)
  • Solid shampoo & conditioner (these Kitsch bars are amazing!)
  • Hairbrush & elastics
  • Floss (because no one wants “spinach in the selfie” moments)
  • Mini shaver
  • Nail clippers, nail file, and tweezers
  • Makeup (powder foundation and brush, eyebrow powder, and chap stick)
  • Pimple patches… yes i still get pimples at my age.

The Syp’s Survival Summary

Will I survive a full year without my Vitamin C serum and retinol? Time will tell.
I may return with a sun-kissed glow… or looking like I’ve aged 14 years instead of one. Either way, hats, sunglasses, and strategic Instagram filters will be working overtime.

And if I do desperately need something or run out? I can always buy it on the road. It might be a weird, off-brand version with questionable packaging — but that’s part of the adventure!

The right toiletry bag really is a game-changer for long-term travel — if it’s well-organized and can hold more than it looks like it can, you’re already halfway to packing victory.

Solid products reduce leaks, a small TSA kit covers emergencies, and leaving behind non-essentials makes room for what matters most — the adventures ahead.
